Michael Arrington’s CrunchPad appears in today’s Singapore Straits Times. The Straits Time team apparently interviewed the Fusion Garage chaps last week. In short, the specifications as revealed by ST is as below:
- Dimensions: 12.77 x 7.83 x 0.74″
- Weight: 1.2kg
- Screen: 12″
- Hardware: 1.6GHz Atom & 1GB RAM
- Software: Webkit browser/operating system, developed by the Fusion Garage team
- Peripherals: 1x USB port built-in, for keyboard or mouse
- Connectivity: WiFi & 3G, with option for mobile broadband
- Price: Unconfirmed, estimated US$399 (approx. S$575)
The Crunchpad is apparently on track to be launched by November this year. Kudos to the Straits Times team.

First it was $200, then $300, now $400. Looking less and less interesting as time goes by. This device is basically a convenience for use on the couch or in the bathroom and only works if it is cheap, so it can be a no brainer purchase. At $200 I buy without a second thought, at $300 I probably buy but I’m going to think about it first, at $400 I check out what else is available and really think about whether I need this or not and if it is going to handle more demanding tasks like 720p video. I don’t expect this from a cheap device but the more it costs, the more I expect it to do and it’s not likely the Crunchpad will deliver.

What kernel does it use? If it uses an open-source kernel such as Linux or FreeBSD, it’s a bit disingenuous of them to NOT mention that and claim they created the OS entirely by themselves (blatantly lying). Even Apple or Google will always give credit/reference back.

I was under the impression that Intel restricts system manufactures to 10 inch screens on Atom-based netbooks.

Unless the company has guaranteed intent to port Chrome OS to it at the end of the year, I am not going to be buying it. Chrome OS is going to see some serious development while this thing may get locked in half-serving linux distro.
Somebody doesn’t know what they’re talking about…
3g AND a port for ‘mobile broadband’? What do they think 3g is? I’ll bet the USB port is the port mentioned, and you won’t find a SIM card slot anywhere on the device.
I wanted a CrunchPad, but as time goes by, I find myself growing more and more cynical about the device. Perhaps it’s time to look at a laptop again…

I read somewhere that this thing has a capacitive screen. Does that mean it has pressure sensitivity? If it had a remote desktop app it could be used as a $400 Wacom tablet, and I’d def. buy it for that
